What is visual Stress?
Also know as Meares Irlen syndrome or scotopic sensitivity, visual stress is a term used to describe discomfort and distortions experienced when reading text. It is not dyslexia but is found in approximately 40% of dyslexics and 20% of students generally.
Symptoms May Include:
- Blurring, movement or patterns in print
- Letters changing size, shape or position
- Missing or rereading lines of text
- Lack of concentration / Comprehension
- Headaches or Visual discomfort
This May Result In:
- Poor literacy scores
- Reduced confidence
- Tiredness
- Behavioural Problems
- Excessive blinking /Rubbing eyes
Signs To Look Out For:
- Misreading text or reading words in the wrong order
- Missing out words or whole lines of text
- Losing place on page
- Moving closer or further from page
- Using finger as a marker
- Fidgeting / Tiring / Rubbing eyes
- Poor comprehension
